Adelaide 500 locks in 2023 support categories

THE Adelaide 500’s planning of its 2023 edition has ramped up, with the support card locked in almost a full year in advance.

The Repco Supercars Championship finale will move forward to November 23-26 next year, and Robbie Williams had already been announced as the concert’s headline act.

Now, a suite of categories have been confirmed in addition to Supercars, namely: Super2, S5000, Touring Car Masters, GT World Challenge Australia and Porsche Carrera Cup Australia.

All but Carrera Cup featured last weekend.

Notably with regards to S5000, the announcement indicated the event will decide the Australian Drivers’ Championship and associated Gold Star, pointing towards a possible change in the open-wheel category’s structure.

S5000 has for the last two years been split into two seasons, the first being a battle for the Gold Star and the second revolving around the revived Tasman Series concept.

S5000 itself however has suggested both the Gold Star and Tasman Series will be up for grabs in Adelaide next year.

Communications from the Adelaide event also hinted at more big names for S5000 on the back of Giancarlo Fisichella’s cameo, and further news on the support front.

“We saw some incredible racing on the streets of Adelaide last week and we are already counting down the days until the next event,” said South Australian Motor Sport CEO Mark Warren.

“The quality and intensity of racing was on full display at this year’s VALO Adelaide 500, and we will once again offer a world-class motorsport line-up in 2023.

“We are working hard to ensure that we build on the success of the 2022 event and the line-up of support categories will ensure that we bring four days of action-packed racing for our fans while also showcasing our incredible racetrack to the world.”
