Adelaide F1 winner to make grand return

THE car which won the 1990 Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix will return to the streets of Adelaide in a matter of months.

Nelson Piquet Sr was behind the wheel of the Benetton B190 Ford when it won from seventh on the grid in Adelaide, the Brazilian legend leading home Nigel Mansell and Alain Prost.

Piquet also won the preceding Japanese Grand Prix and finished third overall in the 1990 world championship behind Ayrton Senna and Prost.

The work of prolific designer Rory Byrne, the Benetton B190 is powered by a Ford V8 engine that produces 650 horsepower at 13,000rpm.

The car will feature at the 2024 Adelaide Motorsport Festival on March 16-17.

It’s the second F1 car confirmed to appear, joining the 2000-spec Benetton 200.

Before then, Adelaide Parklands will host the 2023 Repco Supercars Championship decider next week, November 23-26.
