Advantage Allen as Best rues mistake

ZAK Best is blunt about the incident which has tipped the Dunlop Super2 Series title race on its head: “I f**ked up”.

The Anderson Motorsport ace took a 30-point lead over Kai Allen into yesterday’s penultimate race of the season in Adelaide.

Tensions were high as Allen crossed the line third just ahead of Best, but the latter was demoted to outright 14th due to a 15-second time penalty for nose-to-tail contact with Nash Morris at Turn 5.

All of a sudden, Allen now leads by 33 points, with Best staring down the barrel of being the series runner-up for a third successive year.

“I felt like I was getting ganged up on by all of the Eggleston guys,” Best told V8 Sleuth, with Allen’s teammates Cooper Murray and Cameron Crick classified second and fourth.

“It made things pretty difficult out there, it’s a balancing act between when to be aggressive and when to be careful.

“Obviously I didn’t get that quite right with Nash. I felt the penalty but was probably a little bit rough, 15 seconds (instead of five), but definitely I made a mistake there and have just made it hard for myself really now.

“Hopefully it’s not a three-peat.”

Best will start the final race of the season (1:20pm local/1:50pm AEDT) from second on the grid, two places ahead of Allen.

“The pressure is really off, there’s nothing to lose in a way,” said the 22-year-old, who has been linked to a 2024 full-time seat at Brad Jones Racing/SCT Motorsport.

“So I’ll just be going out there as hard as I can and be really aggressive to try to make sure I win the race and whatever will be, will be.”

Adelaide Race 1 winner Ryan Wood is again on pole position.
