Allen draws first blood in Super2

KAI Allen has made the perfect start to his title defence, topping the opening session of the 2024 Dunlop Super2 Series.

Aboard his Coke-backed #1 ZB Commodore, Allen banged in a late 2:07.5232s to pip Eggleston Motorsport teammate Cooper Murray.

Originally scheduled for 50 minutes, track time was cut short by two red flag interventions: the first caused by Zane Morse stopping down Conrod Straight and the second by Reuben Goodall at the Cutting.

Collectively, that stripped about 17 minutes from the session.

Murray had set the two fastest laps to that point just prior to the Morse issue, to hold the upper hand on 2:07.5269s from Walkinshaw Andretti United’s Zach Bates and Erebus Motorsport’s Jobe Stewart.

Morse (AIM Motorsport) was then fourth, and would only lose one spot by the end, to Allen.

With Goodall’s Gomersall Motorsport entry being retrieved just in time for competitors to sneak in one more flying lap, Dick Johnson Racing co-driver Allen took advantage.

There was bad news for Super2 debutant Mason Kelly in the last-chance dash, with the second-generation driver coming stuck at the top of the Mountain and crashing his #22 Mustang.

Filling positions sixth through 10th in the end were Cameron Crick, Aaron Cameron, Jordyn Sinni, Max Vidau and Lochie Dalton.

Mason Kelly ended the session 15th, but a heavy crash at Sulman Park is likely to rule him out of the weekend.

Compounding a tough start for Adam DeBorre-led AIM was Jett Johnson placing 20th of 24 runners, while James Masterton in their third car failed to even record a timed lap.

The field will aim to get closer to Zak Best’s Super2 Bathurst practice/qualifying effort of a 2:04.7025s when Practice 2 kicks off at 3:25pm AEDT.
