Allen willing to spurn open-wheel opportunities

DUNLOP Super2 champion Kai Allen is inclined to let potential open-wheel prospects pass by as he chases a career in Supercars.

Allen tested with Formula 3 squad Double R Racing at Pembrey Circuit in Wales earlier this year, and then visited Red Bull’s Formula 1 headquarters at Milton Keynes last month including for a stint on the all-conquering outfit’s simulator.

But despite failing to secure a Supercars Championship graduation even after winning the 2023 Super2 title, Allen is committed to his current pathway.

The 18-year-old is arguably the hottest property in Supercars and is widely expected to be handed a 2025 main game drive at Dick Johnson Racing.

Before then, he’ll look to become the first driver to win back-to-back Super2 titles.

“My mind has always been set on Supercars ever since I have been eight years old,” Allen told V8 Sleuth.

“A couple of opportunities came up and I went to see Rob Wilson, the driver coach who works with F1 and IndyCar and all the good drivers, in the UK at the start of this year and that sort of opened the door to doing some more stuff over there.

“So then I drove an F3 in August and then (last month) I got to have a go on the Red Bull F1 sim.

“I’ve been doing it more just for the experience and to drive things like that, because I haven’t really done anything in open-wheelers.

“But at this stage I really want to get in Supercars and get to the main game.

“If there’s no spot for me in Supercars I definitely would have a crack at it but I would definitely like to stay in Supercars.”

Allen could next year become the third Super2 driver ever to run the #1, with the topic of moving away from his beloved #26 being discussed with team Eggleston Motorsport.
