Aussies claim TA2 Trans Tasman title

NATHAN Herne and the Australian team have emerged victorious in the TA2 Trans-Tasman title finale today at Highlands Motorsport Park in New Zealand.

After dominating the first round last weekend in Christchurch, Herne was unstoppable this weekend and claimed the first inter-country TA2 competition held between Australia and New Zealand.

The former Aussie Trans Am series winner took pole and won Race 1 on Saturday and then scored another win in this morning’s race. He was all but unbeatable in the point score with one race remaining after Kiwi Ben Stewart had a clutch issue.

Herne accepted the chance to race for a $1000 bonus put up by SP Tools to start from the rear of the grid in the final race and would collect the cash if he could slice his way through to take victory.

He achieved the task in the 20-lap race, sprinting home to win the race and also claim the Trans Tasman Trophy.

His result and that of his fellow Australian drivers allowed the Aussie team to win the Jason Richards Memorial Trophy, which was accepted by Australian team captain Mark Crutcher.

“This was an awesome experience and I have to thank Chas Howe, Peter Robinson and Cam Sendall for making this happen,” Herne said post-race.

“To be working again with Dad takes us back to the way we did it years ago and I was really happy how it’s all worked out.”
