THE AUSTRALIAN Muscle Car Masters at Sydney Motorsport Park is no more.
The popular muscle car retro-themed event’s banner has been dumped and instead, the Australian Racing Drivers Club will run the ‘ARDC Super 70’ event at SMP on the Father’s Day weekend on September 3-4 this year.
The celebration of 70 years is due to the ARDC’s formation 70 years ago in 1952.
The ARDC’s website says the event will celebrate open wheelers, muscle cars, sports cars and the modern sport of drifting.
Race categories to be featured at the event including Heritage Touring Cars (Group A & C), Classic Sports Cars (Group S), Historic Touring Cars (Group N), HQ Holdens, National Sports Sedans, Production Touring Cars and Superkarts with drifting displays, demos and passenger laps on the Skid Circuit under lights on the Saturday evening.
The ever-popular muscle car-themed Australian Muscle Car Masters event – a mix of on-track racing and car displays and attractions – was first held in 2005 at Sydney Motorsport Park as a joint venture between the Australian Racing Drivers Club and NextMedia, publishers of Australian Muscle Car Magazine.
It was an instant hit and featured a wide array of on-track racing and demonstrations as well as static displays and attractions and legendary drivers on hand to meet with fans.
Booming in the years that followed with huge crowds, the Muscle Car Masters quickly became a Father’s Day tradition.
In 2016 it was decided to move the event from Father’s Day to the end of October to separate it from SMP’s Supercars round.
The ARDC became the sole promoter of the event in the years that followed and took the move to rebrand it in 2019 to the ‘Sydney Masterblast featuring the Australian Muscle Car Masters’, also moving it back to the Father’s Day weekend.
The 2020 and 2021 events were canned due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
