Australian open-wheel calendars released

LOST in the focus surrounding the Adelaide 500 and the various titles on the line there was the launch of a second-year Australian category’s calendar.

Australian Formula Open, which caters for various open-wheel cars, will return in 2024 with a seven-round schedule.

Three of those events will be on the Shannons SpeedSeries undercard, while the remainder will be streamed online.

“AFO is really pleased to secure a broadcast package that will see every round of 2024 either on free-to-air TV or streamed online so that means no one misses out on watching our races,” said category founder Tim Macrow.

“There’s been a lot of work behind the scenes this year to build the foundations of this unique class structure, supporting all types of open-wheelers that we know want to race in Australia, and to have such a strong mix of national events as well helps the category move forward stronger than ever next year.”

Also unveiled in recent days has been the launch of Australian Formula 4, run by Top Speed.

F4 previously ran as a national category Down Under from 2015 to 2019, and will return with four events in Australia followed by one in Malaysia.

“We are excited to bring Formula 4 back to Australia and assist young talent in the country to take the next step and earn important FIA Super License points,” said Top Speed general manager Davide de Gobbi.

“To have four rounds in Australia and an international season finale will give teams and drivers the best of both worlds.

“We believe F4 Australia will provide an excellent platform for young drivers from the region to showcase their talent and develop their skills.

“Motorsport Australia has approved the reintroduction of the category and we will work collaboratively to ensure Formula 4 has a strong future in Australia.”
