BJR feeling Richards/Bright flashbacks

BRAD Jones says this season is giving him flashbacks to the harmony experienced when his team ran Jason Richards and Jason Bright as its drivers in 2010.

The Albury squad is this year fielding an unchanged line-up for the second successive season, with Andre Heimgartner as its spearhead and Bryce Fullwood, Macauley Jones and Jack Smith in support.

“Andre is a team player. He’s one of the best guys I’ve had certainly from that perspective,” Jones Sr told V8 Sleuth.

“The team feel is really, really good with the drivers.

“It feels like the days when we had the two Jasons here. Everyone gets along, they travel around together, it has got a really good vibe about it.

“I think that also helps them when they’re on track. It’s important that your guys are getting pushed from within.”

Heimgartner found that out first-hand at Albert Park, where Fullwood starred.

While Heimgartner got off to a slow start, Fullwood enjoyed stunning charges in the opening two races and was a genuine podium contender in the final two encounters (although a pair of unsafe pit release penalties put paid to any hopes of silverware).

“Bryce and their side made some good gains so we just basically bolted that in for (the Saturday and Sunday) and produced some really good results,” Heimgartner said after finishing second in the last race, which propelled him to fourth in the standings.

With Jones Jr running inside the top 10 for much of the Melbourne SuperSprint and Smith not too far behind, there has been cause for optimism across the fleet.

It follows a promising Gen3 pre-season, including dominating the all-in February test at Sydney Motorsport Park.

“I feel like our pre-season form is starting to shine through a little bit,” added Jones.

Back to that 2010 pairing; Richards was a favourite at BJR, where he finished his career before succumbing to cancer in December 2011.

Bright meanwhile is the most capped BJR driver in terms of championship races (217), having spent seven full-time seasons there from 2010-16.
