BOWE DEVASTATED AFTER SIERRA PISTON FAILURE

A PISTON failure has forced a devastated John Bowe to withdraw from the Archibalds Historic Touring Cars action at Pukekohe Park Raceway.

Aboard the DJR 6 Ford Sierra he raced in the early ‘90s, Bowe qualified on the front row for Race 1 tomorrow.

However, he reported tonight that his Sierra reunion has been cut short, due to the piston issue suffered in the closing stages of qualifying.

“The historic group here in New Zealand are top class people with top class machinery. They have been so welcoming to us,” Bowe wrote, in part, on social media.

“I certainly hope to be invited back. But spectating tomorrow!

“Thanks everyone for your interest in my reunion with the Sierra. There is a real growth in historic racing after Covid, and I’m loving it.”

The two-time Bathurst 1000 winner had earlier today voiced just how much he enjoyed being back in old-school equipment and alongside the likes of Greg Murphy, Steven Richards and Paul Radisich.

“It was just a really good period of my racing life back then,” Bowe told V8 Sleuth.

“I hadn’t driven that car for 31 years. When I drove it this morning in the first session, it was the first time in 31 years.

“I’d forgotten how vicious they are, like they are seriously a vicious car, but when you’re driving them all the time you sort of get used to it.”

Michael Lyons qualified on pole, with Murphy and Radisich just behind Bowe in third and fourth.

Race 1 for the Historics starts at 8:35am AEST/10:35am NZST tomorrow.
