Boys praises S5000 calendar direction

S5000 Tasman Series contender Jordan Boys has praised the direction category management are set to take with future calendars.

Despite being owned by the Australian Racing Group, it’s expected S5000 will have a reduced presence on the 2023 SpeedSeries schedule.

Instead, selected high-profile events will be chosen, several of which stemming from the Repco Supercars Championship side of things.

Boys, who topped opening practice yesterday at Surfers Paradise, believes that is the correct move.

“It’s great to be at this sort of profile event,” he said.

“I think we need to not be worried about putting the cars on (any) track. We just need to be at these events, like this one, Adelaide, that kind of thing.

“We’d all love to be in a world where you can just take these cars to Phillip Island and Tailem Bend and there’d be thousands of people rocking up to watch but it’s just not the world we live in.

“I’d really like to see (a consolidated calendar) and it’s what the category is doing.

“I think it will really help us all find commercial partners for it.

“If we just work with that over a year or two, I think it does have a spot on the calendar and just focus on those five or six races.”

The S5000 field could well break the all-time Gold Coast lap record today, based on the 1:10.0973s set by Cooper Webster in Practice 2.

The fastest ever lap of the 2.96km variation of the Surfers Paradise Street Circuit currently belongs to Jamie Whincup.

In Supercars practice at the 2017 event, Whincup managed a 1:09.9179s – which Webster got within two tenths of yesterday.

S5000’s first on-track session today is qualifying at 10:50am local time (11:50am AEDT).
