Brown channelling Larson in Bend-Sonoma trek

WILL Brown will capitalise on his Pilatus relationship to maximise preparations for his NASCAR Cup Series debut next weekend.

The 2024 Repco Supercars Championship leader is this weekend racing in GT World Challenge Australia at The Bend in South Australia.

His duties aboard the #87 Shaw & Partners Audi he shares with Brad Schumacher are due to conclude when the chequered flag is shown at 2:55pm ACST on Sunday, signifying the end of Race 2.

Then it’s all about getting from Tailem Bend (105km southeast of Adelaide) to Sonoma Raceway (55km north of San Francisco) as quickly as possible.

“I feel like I’m nearly doing a Kyle Larson!” Brown told V8 Sleuth, with reference to the Indianapolis 500/Coca-Cola 600 double recently attempted by the American ace.

“Pilatus have put a jet at Murray Bridge, so I take off straight from there into Melbourne, jump on an airliner straight to Sonoma to make it there in time to do all my pre-week stuff from Monday.”

The NASCAR dream is quickly getting very real for Brown, who will represent Chevrolet powerhouse Richard Childress Racing.

“If you asked me a year ago if I would be doing a NASCAR race, I’d think you were crazy,” said the Triple Eight Supercars driver.

“To get this opportunity is massive; I’m really excited to get over there.

“I just want to go over and have a race and see how I fare against these guys. It’s going to be pretty cool.

“I went over there for a week before Perth and I really enjoyed that, so if I could do a couple a year it would be pretty cool.”

Brown is under contract with Triple Eight until the end of 2026 and has been vocal in declaring his absolute commitment to a future in Supercars.

He is nevertheless optimistic of jagging a strong result at the Sonoma road course, where Cam Waters will also make a cameo appearance for RFK Racing.

“I think we should be in for an okay result,” said Brown. “Who knows what that is, but you’ve seen what Brodie did when he went over as well – he qualified quite well.

“We’re not going there just to run around, we want to have a good race.”
