Brown wins as disaster strikes for Kostecki, Mostert

WILL Brown has continued his stellar run of form on a day where Brodie Kostecki and Chaz Mostert’s championship hopes were dented.

Brown converted from pole position after narrowly beating Jack Le Brocq to the first corner but all the focus was on the scrap which soon kicked off behind.

It was on the third run through the hairpin that mayhem broke out, as Kostecki, Le Brocq and Waters squabbled over second place.

Kostecki had just passed Le Brocq and as Waters tried to follow him through, the #34 Truck Assist Camaro tapped the rear of the championship leader’s car – who then made slight contact with Waters as the Monster Energy Mustang scythed through down the inside.

That was enough to cause steering damage for Kostecki, forcing him back to the pitlane.

He was joined there by Mostert and James Courtney, who had both also sustained steering damage.

Mostert was tangled in a separate Lap 3 hairpin incident where he was spun by Feeney, who escaped punishment, while Courtney was shoved wide in the opening lap run through Turns 6 and 7.

Kostecki and Courtney both eventually rejoined, multiple laps down, but Mostert was forced to retire from the race.

That was the peak of the drama, with Brown relatively untroubled and only the minor placings up for debate.

It was ultimately Andre Heimgartner who took the chequered flag in second, 0.6856s behind Brown.

Heimgartner leapfrogged Waters when both ducked into pitlane on Lap 21, with his Brad Jones Racing crew outshining their Tickford Racing counterparts.

It got worse for Waters, whose second podium of the season slipped away when Shane van Gisbergen snatched third on the final lap.

A frustrated Waters was left to settle for fourth, he again flew the Ford flag solo in a top eight otherwise filled with Camaros.

Fifth went to Scott Pye, whose engineer Richard Hollway was rewarded for being bravest on the undercut.

Pye was the first to make a tyre stop on Lap 13 and put his fresh rubber to use to gain significant ground.

Tim Slade was sixth ahead of Matt Stone Racing teammates Le Brocq and Cameron Hill, with Nick Percat delivering a fine drive to ninth.

Thomas Randle denied Dick Johnson Racing a top 10, with Will Davison and Anton De Pasquale 11th and 13th – split by birthday boy Mark Winterbottom.

Feeney came home 18th, Kostecki 23rd and Courtney 24th.

Kostecki’s championship lead has now been slashed to 74 points, with van Gisbergen and Brown both jumping Mostert who had entered the day second.
