Cameron on S5000 pole with fastest ever Adelaide lap

ADELAIDE has just witnessed the fastest ever lap on its modern-day street circuit after the S5000 Tasman Series field put on a show.

The official lap record, set in a race, still stands at 1:17.9726s, recorded by Simon Hodge in 2014 in Formula 3.

That number is sure to be broken, given it was bettered by all of the top 10 in S5000 qualifying this morning.

Fastest of all was Aaron Cameron, who worked his way down to a 1:15.4972s – almost a full 2.5 seconds below Hodge’s marker.

As is often the case with S5000, times plummeted as the session wore on, with tyres warming up to peak performance.

In the end, Cameron was 0.2845s clear of Tasman Series points leader Nathan Herne, whose chief rival Joey Mawson will start fourth.

Cooper Webster was third, while 2005 Australian Grand Prix winner Giancarlo Fisichella defied his age – he turns 50 next month – to qualify fifth.

The first of three S5000 races will start today at 2:55pm local time (3:25pm AEDT).
