Canto/Brabham team up for Lamborghini one-make series

WHILE the eyes of many motorsport fans will this weekend be fixated on the Finke Desert Race or Winton SpeedSeries, there’ll be an international category making its Australian debut.

The Lamborghini Super Trofeo Asia Series will head to The Bend Motorsport Park for Round 2 of its 2023 season.

For the occasion, Dean Canto and Sam Brabham will join forces in a one-off Zagame Autosport entry in the Pro class, driving a Sam Soo-owned Huracán Super Trofeo Evo 2.

Two-time Supercars Championship race winner Canto has clocked up plenty of Super Trofeo mileage in recent years, although this will be his first opportunity in a racing capacity.

“We’re not there to just make up the numbers” Canto told V8 Sleuth.

“The only unknown for me really is the Hankook tyre. They’ve been having some weird set-ups going into the cars because of it and limiting cambers and things like that.

“That’s the only unknown for me but otherwise the car and the track I’m very familiar with.

“We’re going to be pushing as hard as we can to get a podium.”

Canto spoke highly of the car and its “bang-for-buck performance”.

“Around The Bend it’s probably a pretty similar pace to a GT3 car,” he said.

“It has got more power than the GT3-spec Lambo because you have got a much bigger restrictor.

“It doesn’t have as much downforce as a GT3 car but I’d probably describe it as like a 997 Cup Car to drive.

“It’s almost like a go-kart, you can move it around, you can have some fun with it, it’s an easy car to drive.”

Among other drivers set to be on the grid is versatile Kiwi veteran Chris van der Drift, who combined with compatriot Marco Giltrap to win the opening race of the season at Sepang.

Practice starts tomorrow in preparation for a pair of 50-minute races on the weekend.
