Chevrolet, Ford rivalry spills over into off-road arena

CHEVROLET has launched an off-road racer concept which could grow the brand’s budding rivalry with Ford.

The Blue Oval recently contested the Baja 1000 with its new Ranger Raptor model.

Now, Chevrolet has revealed its Silverado ZR2 to be launched early next year.

It adds a different dimension to the Chevrolet versus Ford battle which will light up the Gen3 era of the Repco Supercars Championship.

“The Chevrolet Silverado ZR2 will be a new model to the GMSV line-up for MY23 and will deliver next-level off-road capability direct from the factory – making it the perfect platform for this latest announcement from Chevrolet Racing,” said Tim Price of General Motors Australia/New Zealand.

“What started as a passion project 12 months ago across GM teams in Australia and New Zealand quickly transformed into the creation you see today.”

The concept was built at GM’s Port Melbourne workshop and elevated with the help of GM’s United States-based motorsports division.

Testing is due to being in early 2023, with seven-time Bathurst 1000 winner Craig Lowndes involved.

“I am extremely proud to have been given the opportunity to lead the project and I am grateful for the support GM ANZ management has provided to the team,” said program manager Mark Wakeman.

“I would also like to express sincere gratitude to our partners who have been involved in this incredible journey.

“It demonstrates the dedication and enthusiasm the team at GM ANZ has for a project of this magnitude.”

Chevrolet/GM has in recent times made a point of broadening its horizons Down Under, including with a drag racing-orientated media call during the Repco Bathurst 1000 last month.

Holden will officially depart the top-tier Supercars scene after this weekend’s VALO Adelaide 500.
