Davison fastest as rain closes in on Mount Panorama

WILL Davison has continued to flash the Shell V-Power Racing Team’s pace as preparations for Sunday’s Great Race ramped up.

Unlike the opening couple of hour-long sessions yesterday, Practice 3 was relatively uneventful as teams made the most of what could be the last fully dry running all week.

Most teams took the opportunity to practice driver changes and refuelling stops, and several opted to explore longer runs despite qualifying looming this afternoon.

Conditions are likely to be vastly different by then however, with rain on its way and potential thunderstorms to follow.

In any case, the bulk of the session saw either Car #99 (Brodie Kostecki/David Russell) or Car #6 (Cam Waters/James Moffat) atop the timesheets.

Kostecki was the first into the 2:04s, achieved on his second flying lap, and he was soon joined in that bracket by Andre Heimgartner and Waters.

It was a third of the way through the session that Waters grabbed top spot with a 2:04.5734s.

Times improved deeper into the session with Shane van Gisbergen twice posting purple first sectors, only to wind up frustrated unable to piece together a full lap.

Waters did go faster, lowering the benchmark by nearly two tenths, only for Practice 1 pacesetter Davison to fire in a 2:04.2077s with five minutes remaining.

That time – despite being slower than what Garth Tander managed in yesterday’s co-driver session – would not be bettered.

“That’s two (all-driver) sessions now and we’re at the top,” said Davison.

“We don’t look into that too much because we know there’s a lot going on but we’re clearly trending in the right direction.

“We’re trying some stuff here because we weren’t good enough here last year. I’m glad we got some dry running to get the knowledge that we have because we’re outside our normal window.

“The track’s definitely not as good as yesterday. With the sealant gone we’re missing quite a bit of grip we had yesterday and were probably all relying on.

“Overall, the track felt worse but we made good ground.”

Waters and Kostecki stayed top three, while Tim Slade was the best of the rest in fourth.

Chaz Mostert, Will Brown, Heimgartner, Anton De Pasquale, Thomas Randle and van Gisbergen finished fifth through 10th.

Unfortunately a tough lead-in for Richie Stanaway continued, the #51 entry ending up last in the 28-car field after being parked in the garage for the last half-hour.

Stanaway also had limited running yesterday after a starter motor issue reared its head in Practice 1.

Practice 4 starts at 1pm before qualifying from 4:15pm.
