Detailed: The new Motorsport Australia Superlicence rules

EVEN with Motorsport Australia’s removal of barriers for aspiring Supercars drivers, the Superlicence system remains somewhat complex – so V8 Sleuth takes the opportunity here to decrypt the revised rules.

To qualify for a Motorsport Australia Superlicence endorsement each applicant must:

  • hold a minimum of an FIA International Grade C Circuit Licence; and
  • be a minimum of 17 years of age; and
  • subject to items (d) and (e) below, have accumulated a minimum of 15 points under either the FIA (refer Appendix L to the Code) or Motorsport Australia Superlicence points system during the 5 years prior to the application.

So, now there is no additional criteria involving the need to have completed a specified number of rounds in the Dunlop Super2 Series on top of accumulating the required licence points.

Rather, if the driver in question has accrued the necessary 15 points (refer to the table below for as to how), then they are eligible for a Superlicence and thus able to race in the Repco Supercars Championship – although any application is to be made by a team on the driver’s behalf.

The 15-point tally is not the only way in, though, as outlined here:

If the applicant cannot satisfy criteria (c)(iii) above it may be replaced by the applicant satisfying 1 of the following criteria:

  • have competed in a minimum of 3 rounds of the Supercars Championship within the last 5 years prior to the application; or
  • have competed in and received endorsement signatures from the RD at a minimum of 6 rounds of the Supercars Super2 Series within the last 3 years prior to the application.

There is further scope for exemptions to be requested, although that path is likely to be mainly meant for internationals or other special cases.
