ELIGIBILITY BACKFLIP LIKELY FOR 2023 SUPER2

Mustangs and Commodore ZBs are set to be the only cars that will compete in the 2023 Dunlop Super2 Series after all.

V8 Sleuth understands the matter was discussed at the latest Supercars Commission meeting on Wednesday, with the majority now in favour of shifting the previous generation of Car of the Future Holdens, Fords and Nissans to Super3 for next season.

The revised concept still needs to be ticked off by Supercars’ board before being officially confirmed.

In July it was announced that Supercars had decided that all Car of the Future and Gen2 Supercars would compete against one another in Super2 in 2023, leaving Super3 for ‘Project Blueprint’ era Falcon FG and Commodore VE IIs and earlier.

That meant the ZB Commodore and Mustang GT would have been pitted against the existing VF Commodore, Falcon FG X and Nissan Altima.

However, the newer generation of cars will now fight it out for Super2 honours, while the previous generation Car of the Future machines will battle with the prior generation Project Blueprint cars in a combined Super3 field.

It mirrors the introduction of COTF-era machinery into Super2 in 2016, a season where the newer cars also raced against the existing Commodore VE II and Falcon FGs, albeit with the latter cars updated to running with the 18-inch tyre and wheel package.

The next round of the Dunlop Series for Super2 and Super3 cars will be at Sandown in Melbourne on August 19-21.

Triple Eight’s Declan Fraser, who will team up with Craig Lowndes in a wildcard entry at this year’s Repco Bathurst 1000, leads the Super2 points by 69 over Triple Eight teammate Cameron Hill.
