Engel behind Reynolds’ factory Mercedes gig

DAVID Reynolds has revealed the role Maro Engel played in teeing him up with a factory Mercedes-AMG GT deal.

As part of the arrangement, whereby he joins the brand’s ‘Expert’ driver tier, Reynolds will share the GruppeM all-Pro Merc with Engel and Felipe Fraga in this weekend’s Repco Bathurst 12 Hour.

While Reynolds admits to not having any further GT3 races lined up for 2024 beyond Bathurst, he’s relishing the factory status.

“I’m fairly familiar with these cars, even though I only race them once a year at this track, I still know them a little bit,” the 2017 Bathurst 1000 winner said at Mount Panorama for a special episode of the Motorsport News Podcast.

“My friend Maro Engel, who is obviously world-class and probably one of the best GT drivers in the world, got in touch with me over Christmas and said ‘I want to do the Bathurst 12 Hour with you, I want to win the race with you and learn from you about this track’.

“And I said ‘man, I feel like the amateur going up against you, you’re extremely fast in these cars and pretty much should have won this race a few times now’.

“He sort of put my name forward to AMG and it’s come out that I’m part of the team now.

“I feel amazing walking into the garage and seeing my name with Maro Engel and Felipe Fraga and next to it is AMG-Mercedes Team GruppeM Racing.”

Reynolds has contested the last seven consecutive Bathurst 12 Hour races.

Six of those starts have come in Mercedes-AMG equipment, with his best result of fifth achieved co-driving an Erebus Motorsport SLS in 2016.

The 38-year-old will race for Team 18 in the 2024 Repco Supercars Championship.
