Erebus intent on running down Groves

EREBUS Motorsport has set its sights on outdoing Grove Racing at Adelaide in an eleventh-hour bid to wrestle back fifth in the Supercars teams’ championship.

Erebus and Grove have been separated by little all year, a battle which has at times included Tickford Racing and Walkinshaw Andretti United before those two eventually broke clear.

Grove, the team which Penrite ditched Erebus for at the end of 2020 when David Reynolds shifted camps, holds the high ground leading into the Adelaide finale.

Having finished just eighth in 2021, the Ford outfit is 70 points up the road from sixth-placed Erebus, thanks largely to Reynolds’ stellar season.

But Erebus CEO Barry Ryan is not conceding by any means just yet.

“It’s definitely in the back of our mind,” he told V8 Sleuth.

“We 100 percent want to retain our pitlane position and we’re in jeopardy of losing one spot.

“It’s only 70 points… we’re aiming to make sure we outscore both those two Grove cars with both our cars and the maths will take care of itself.”

While Reynolds and teammate Lee Holdsworth have made 58 prior race starts at Adelaide between them, it will be a first main game appearance there for Erebus duo Brodie Kostecki and Will Brown.

Promisingly, Kostecki has emerged from a mid-season slump to deliver at Bathurst and the Gold Coast.

“We have worked really hard around some things that we needed to fix and especially at street circuits like Gold Coast and that’s worked really well,” said Ryan.

“Bathurst we’re always pretty strong. Will had a great race the last race at Gold Coast but got some stupid penalty for something he shouldn’t have got – that sort of robbed a few points off us.

“But going to Adelaide, they were both really impressive there back in 2020 in Super2 so they’re both going to be out there trying to win, they’re not going to be out there just trying to make up the numbers.”
