Erebus signs 12-year-old to Academy deal

EREBUS Motorsport has made the latest addition to its junior pipeline, recruiting Ryan Wyhoon to its Academy.

The 12-year-old is the son of three-time Bathurst 1000 starter Terry Wyhoon, a Super2 race winner whose best main game result was 11th in the 2000 Queensland 500.

Wyhoon has himself transitioned into guiding young talent through his Image Racing team, which Erebus is affiliated with.

Entering his seventh season of go-karting, his son has caught the eye of Barry Ryan.

“It’s great to see a young kid from such a rich family pedigree of racers focused on a career in motorsport,” said the Erebus CEO.

“Ryan has shown a lot of determination and passion at such a young age and I’m really looking forward to watching his progression throughout the years.”

Wyhoon Jr had a taste of American racing last year and is preparing to kickstart his 2023 campaign Down Under next month in the KA3 Junior Heavy class.

“Motorsport is everything to me,” he said.

“My parents took me to my first racetrack when I was a week old and then I had my first race weekend in Tasmania the week after so ever since I was born, I’ve always been at the racetrack.

“My Dad got me my first kart when I was five and I started racing the following year at the Morwell Go Kart track.”

Of his Academy opportunity, Wyhoon added: “I think it’ll be a great experience for me to interact with other Erebus Academy drivers knowing that they could be in Supercars one day.

“It’s really cool knowing I’m part of the same Academy that Will Brown was once a part of.”

Brown is now a Repco Supercars Championship race winner and is under contract at Erebus until the end of 2024.
