Ex-Motorsport Australia executive’s new role

LONG-TIME Motorsport Australia leader Michael Smith is taking his administrative expertise to the Middle East.

It was announced last month that Smith was leaving Motorsport Australia after more than two decades, the last chunk of which has been served as the organising body’s director of motorsport and commercial operations.

At the time, details of his next post were not made public beyond being based overseas.

It is now clear that Smith is moving to Riyadh to fill a senior sporting and technical role with the Saudi Automobile & Motorcycle Federation.

Saudi Arabia’s global motorsport presence has surged in recent years, hosting Formula 1 (at Jeddah), Formula E (Riyadh), Extreme E (Jeddah) and the Dakar Rally, with MotoGP having been floated as a future option too.

It’s understood Smith finished up with Motorsport Australia last week and will relocate to the Middle East in the coming days.

Motorsport Australia has undergone a changing of the guard with stalwarts Smith and Eugene Arocca moving on, and Sunil Vohra coming in as CEO.
