Eyes forward for Hazelwood after MSR heartbreak

TODD Hazelwood has had to put behind him a torrid end to his second stint at Matt Stone Racing as he looks to make his mark in Gen3.

The Hazelwood/MSR reunion started strongly this year, the 2017 Super2 champion a regular top 10 runner through the first four rounds before falling away dramatically.

That early season form only returned at the Adelaide finale, where Hazelwood made consecutive Shootouts for the first time all year and was well in contention for top 10 results both days.

However, it was not to be, taken out by Cam Waters in the Saturday race and suffering a late power steering failure the next day.

“I guess (Adelaide) was probably a snapshot of our season: we had a lot of highlights but haven’t had the result to back it up,” Hazelwood told V8 Sleuth.

“It was a tough way to end this year with a tough race.

“We were comfortably running seventh there with 15 laps to go and unfortunately the power steering failed and let go and that was the end of our race, so we had to pit. It was pretty gutting.

“It’s not the result that the team deserved.”

Having opted against continuing with MSR in favour of signing with the Blanchard Racing Team for 2023, Hazelwood began the process of immersing himself with his new home well before Adelaide.

With Gen3’s introduction, he hopes year six can be his best yet as a Repco Supercars Championship regular.

“Going into the start of next season I’ll be pulling my sleeves up trying to give it everything that I’ve got to start the year well,” said the 27-year-old.

“Obviously Gen3 is an exciting era where I think it is really going to reward the driver that puts in the hard yards leading into the season, putting the hard work in through the pre-season test days.

“So for us being a single-car team, I’m looking forward to the challenge.
