F1 STARS TO DRIVE SUPERCARS AT ALBERT PARK

FORMULA 1 aces Fernando Alonso and Sergio Perez are set to sample Repco Supercars Championship machinery at Albert Park.

Two-time world champion Alonso will steer Thomas Randle’s Tickford Racing Mustang in a special ‘guest laps’ session at 5:15pm today (Thursday).

The link comes through the Mustang’s major backer Castrol, which is a partner of the Alpine F1 Team for which the Spanish veteran competes.

The drive will mark Alonso’s first taste of a Supercar; he was set to sample the Zak Brown-owned 2011 Bathurst-winning Holden Racing Team Commodore VEII in Spain in 2017, but the car ran out of fuel before he could get aboard.

Prior to becoming Randle’s Mustang for 2022, the chassis that Alonso will drive was previously used by James Courtney in 2021 and was the car Cam Waters drove to pole position for the 2020 Bathurst 1000.

Red Bull Racing’s Perez meanwhile is expected to drive a Red Bull Ampol Racing Commodore around the 5.3km Albert Park circuit.

The Mexican’s running in Triple Eight’s spare car will also take place in the guest laps session, which last saw race action as the team’s wildcard entry for last year’s Repco Bathurst 1000.

The ZB is on hand for Jamie Whincup to drive in the Speed Comparison event against a Toyota Yaris rally car steered by Harry Bates and a Luke Youlden-piloted Porsche road car.

Thursday’s track action at Albert Park includes practice and two qualifying for Supercars, while the Formula 1 cars do not take to the circuit until Friday.
