F1 team boss backs Masi in Supercars role

MICHAEL Masi has received a key vote of confidence amid his first event as Supercars Commission chairman.

The ex-Formula 1 race director was last month announced as Neil Crompton’s replacement heading up the rule-making advisory panel.

That came ahead of the Auckland SuperSprint, but Masi was not on the ground at Pukekohe.

The Australian is however roaming the paddock at the Repco Bathurst 1000 this weekend in what is his first Supercars event since the 2019 Adelaide 500.

Another familiar F1 face, Zak Brown, is also in attendance at Mount Panorama.

In addition to being McLaren CEO, Brown is a co-owner of Walkinshaw Andretti United – the team which conquered the 2021 Great Race.

Masi was shuffled out of the F1 system following a controversial championship decider last year at Abu Dhabi, but Brown is certain he’ll be an asset to the Repco Supercars Championship.

“I like Michael. We’re getting a bite to eat later,” Brown told media today at Bathurst.

“I was a fan of his in Formula 1.

“It’s unfortunate what happened there, I think he’s a very good race steward and he’s a racer so I’m glad to see that he’s in Supercars because I think he adds value.”

Practice 4 is currently underway at the Repco Bathurst 1000, with substantial rain creating tricky conditions.

“This is my second time at Bathurst and first time in Australia in a few years, since the pandemic,” Brown added.

“It’s the biggest race of the year. We won it last year, I had to watch it on TV, got the trophy, but I wanted to come here and I’m excited to be here.”
