Feeney riding confidence wave into Newcastle

BROC Feeney’s last two major motorsport events could not have gone much better, setting the stage for a must-watch sophomore Supercars season.

The 20-year-old capped a stellar maiden main game campaign with victory at the Adelaide 500 in December, earning a spot in the record books as the last ever Holden race winner in championship history.

He backed that up with a stunning display at the Bathurst 12 Hour last month, upstaging higher-profile teammates Shane van Gisbergen and Maximilian Götz to be handed the keys for the Top 10 Shootout.

Feeney would go on to put their #888 Mercedes-AMG on the front row with a 2:01.0983s. The trio missed the podium come race day but Feeney had made his mark.

Now armed with a brand-new Supercar eliminating the years of experiential advantage his rivals had previously held over him, Feeney enters Round 1 at Newcastle high on confidence.

“It’s good. Certainly I’m in a different spot than I was last year,” he told V8 Sleuth.

“I mean coming in as a rookie I had a lot to learn and I still do have a lot to learn but I feel like it has been good.

“I ended last year well but we’re all on zero at the moment, it’s a new year.

“Bathurst was good, I gelled well with that car so it was nice.

“It’s just about getting on top of these things. I mean the last two race meetings I’ve done in completely different cars so I have just got to make sure I get comfortable and get on top of this and hopefully carry on.”

Triple Eight managing director Jamie Whincup believes Feeney has a “fantastic foundation” to build off.

“He now knows – I’m not putting any more pressure than he puts on himself – he needs to step up another level again but the trajectory he is on, he’ll have no problems there,” Whincup said recently.

“I’m excited to see where 2023 takes him.”

Feeney has never before raced a Supercar at Newcastle but does have prior experience at the circuit via the Toyota Gazoo Racing Australia 86 Series in 2018.
