Fisichella open to Supercars cameo

GIANCARLO Fisichella has flagged interest in hopping into a Supercar as he prepares to feature at the upcoming VALO Adelaide 500.

Fisichella is a major drawcard secured for the S5000 Tasman Series support class on December 1-4, the Italian having won three Formula 1 grands prix in a career which included stints at Ferrari, Renault and Benetton.

Now 49, he remains a regular in the FIA World Endurance Championship and is open to further expanding his racing portfolio.

Asked if he’d take a close look at the Repco Supercars Championship while in Adelaide with a view to an opportunity one day, Fisichella replied: “I like the category, it’s a very famous category in Australia and around the world and there’s a lot of very good drivers.

“I like this kind of races and I will see the race.

“Especially in the past when I was in Melbourne, I was always watching the race, so why not?

“Maybe one day I can race in this category.”

Fisichella’s former teammate Fernando Alonso took Thomas Randle’s Castrol Mustang for a spin at Albert Park in April, seemingly enjoying the experience.

Red Bull’s Sergio Perez likewise had a steer of Triple Eight’s spare ZB Commodore at the event.

Winner of the 2005 Australian Grand Prix, Fisichella does not expect an easy task to add to his victory tally Down Under when he lines up in S5000.

“I come over there to win, as always, but I know it is going to be very difficult,” he said.

“There are a lot of very, very good drivers, very good teams around and it is going to be very tough. I will try my best, I want to win, but it’s quite difficult.

“It would be nice to get on the podium for sure.”
