FIVE-LITRE CARS HIT THE ISLAND

Field of ex-V8 Supercars confirmed for PI Classic demo this weekend

THE V8 Sleuth will be trackside this weekend at Phillip Island for the annual Phillip Island Classic festival of racing featuring demonstration runs from the growing Australian 5-Litre Touring Car Association.

The Sleuth himself will also be on the microphone for those trackside as the five-litre Commodores and Falcons turn laps of the 4.445-kilometre Grand Prix Circuit in their debut at the Phillip Island Classic.

A total of 12 very familiar cars will take part in demonstration sessions on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

So who is in the field?

There are a few interesting cars for the weekend and some cars making first appearances and the like.

Former Castrol Cougar Melinda Price will have her first drive of a V8 Supercar in over a decade when she takes the wheel of Keith Linnell’s ex-John Briggs, Supercheap Auto Falcon EL.

Craig Bowring will get his ex-Tomas Mezera, Densitron Commodore VT on the track over a decade since it last raced in the top-tier of the sport, while Allen Nash’s ex-David ‘Truckie’ Parsons Commodore VR will re-appear in its original 1995 paintwork and sticker job for the first time.

We hear Truckie himself and some of his old crew will even be at Phillip Island this weekend too!

Keep an eye on Saturday Sleuthing on the V8 Supercars website this weekend for a story on that car.

Mike Imrie will run two cars at Phillip Island – his ex-Steve Richards/Wynn’s VT Commodore and the ex-Delta Europcar Commodore will re-appear in its green colours with V8 Ute star Elliot Barbour reported to be at the helm.

Australian Five-Litre Touring Car Association president Troy Kelly will again drive Andre Matheson’s ex-Alan Jones Peter Jackson Falcon EF, while familiar faces Troy Stapleton (Shell Helix Falcon EL) and Kane Fitzgerald (Hungry Jack’s Commodore) will be in attendance.

Alan Polglase will bring his Perkins-built, ex-Everlast Commodore VL across from Tasmania, while Dylan Innes will be at the helm of the ex-Mike Imrie Armor All Commodore VS which has recently undergone a freshen up birthday.

Geoff Munday will make his first appearance with the Association in his ex-CAT Racing Falcon AU recently purchased from Kevin Stoopman.

Expect too for some cars to be displayed outside the circuit in the Expo area with some surprises for Phillip Island Classic patrons.

The Five-Litre cars will be on track on Friday at 12.50pm, Saturday at 12.40pm and Sunday 1.05pm.
