Ford, Kelly Racing build Baja 1000 beast

FORD has announced its participation in the gruelling Baja 1000 via its Next-Generation Ranger Raptor.

Ford Performance collaborated with former Supercars team Kelly Racing, led by Bathurst 1000 winner Todd Kelly, to build and test the race truck in Australia.

It was then sent to the United States for the final phases of development and testing before the notorious Mexican event, which will unfold later this month.

American outfit Lovell Racing will field the truck at Baja.

“By entering this event, we’re building on the hundreds of thousands of kilometres of development testing and pushing the Ranger Raptor to new extremes,” said Ford Performance off-road motorsports supervisor Brian Novak.

“The Baja 1000 is a demanding event and a well-known proving ground for off-road vehicles.

“We are excited to compete in this extreme event with Ranger Raptor.”

The Ranger Raptor will be powered by a Shell biofuel.

“Demonstrating low-carbon fuels in performance settings like the Baja 1000 can help bring biofuels and other clean energy technologies to scale more quickly, and help to make them more available and affordable for everyone,” said Cynthia Williams, Ford’s global director of sustainability, compliance and homologation.

It’s understood Ford is also mulling a future tilt at Australia’s Finke Desert Race.
