Ford outlasts Chevrolet in Finke Desert duel

FORD has overhauled Chevrolet to take victory in the Australian outback.

The Raptor Ranger of Brad and Byam Lovell today survived all that the Northern Territory terrain could throw at them to take out the Production 4WD class of the Finke Desert Race.

Chevrolet had held the upper hand with its Silverado ZR2 Off Road Racer shared by Craig Lowndes and Dale Moscatt, having completed Sunday’s Alice Springs to Aputula journey more than four minutes quicker than the Blue Oval team.

But hopes of an upset result came crashing down just 35km into the return leg this morning as a suspension issue caused a DNF.

“First of all I’d like to congratulate the Lovell’s and the Ford team on their class win today,” said Lowndes.

“Dale and I have thoroughly enjoyed the battle with each other here at Finke.

“The Silverado was tough all weekend, from taking out prologue and line honours to day one, but unfortunately we were beaten by the desert today.

“I can’t say a big enough thanks to the GM team here on the ground and back at base who’ve worked so hard on this program over the last two years.

“Also a big thanks to Mike Henry and the team at Rampex for their technical and race support.”

The Lovells made it back, recording a total time of 5hr58m23.501s.

That was good enough for the class win and 66th overall in Cars, albeit some way off outright victors Beau Robinson and Shane Hutt (3hr28m44.776s).
