Formula Ford powerhouse names 2023 driver line-up

SONIC Motor Racing Services is Australian motorsport’s version of a talent finding agency.

Will Davison, Jamie Whincup, David Reynolds, Nick Percat, Cameron Waters and Anton De Pasquale are all graduates of the Melbourne team’s junior Formula Ford program.

In fact in 2023, Sonic will celebrate 25 years since Michael and Maria Ritter started the team, and in that quarter century of competition, they have won the Formula Ford crown on 12 occasions.

If any Supercars team boss is looking for the next wave of talent, Sonic is often the first stop.

Today, Sonic has revealed its 2023 driver line-up, made up of drivers that, right now, you have never heard of. But given the team’s strike rate in helping launch the careers of young guns, you may want to save a space for these three drivers’ names in your autograph book.

Victorian state champion Matt Hillyer, Jake Santalucia and newcomer Conor Somers will drive for the team this year, and hope that they will be the next big star of the sport, using Sonic’s immense knowledge to, potentially, make them the next Whincup or Davison.

“The honour board on the Sonic pit garage speaks for itself, Mick and Maria know what they’re doing as demonstrated by the titles the team has won, so for us it was definitely the next step,” said Somers.

“We knew Sonic was the place to be to put us in the best position to win the title.

“You can see straight away why Sonic is so successful, the attention to detail is amazing and the team is so focused at the track. It’s just a big step up in joining Sonic.

“It’s good to listen to all the team personnel as most have been there, done that in terms of winning Formula Ford titles, which is essential to my learning during the season.

“For sure we’re aiming for the title, that’s our main focus. In moving to Sonic, we’re putting ourselves in the best position to win the title, so that’s where the target is.”

The 2023 Australian Formula Ford Series starts at Queensland’s Morgan Park Raceway on March 17-19.
