Grove Racing confirms number change for 2023

GROVE Racing rookie Matt Payne will run a number commonly affiliated with a now-defunct team in the 2023 Repco Supercars Championship.

The team has announced that Payne will run #19, which long belonged to Tekno Autosports.

In fact, #19 has not been run by anyone other than Jonathon Webb or his team in 20 years, dating back to the 2003 Bathurst 1000 when it was used by Ford Performance Racing’s David Besnard/Owen Kelly entry.

The number disappeared from the grid this year with Tekno’s sale to Peter Xiberras.

Grove’s motivation though relates to its naming rights sponsor Penrite, which appears to be a lock to support the team into Gen3 next year.

Combining with David Reynolds’ #26, the 19/26 combination pays tribute to Penrite’s founding in 1926 by Les Mecoles.

“With our 2023 driver line-up, the change to #19 and #26 signifies a new era for both us and Penrite, welcoming Matt Payne alongside long-time Penrite ambassador, David Reynolds,” said team owner Stephen Grove.

“It’s great that we’ve had the opportunity to run numbers that mean so much to Penrite and showcase such a long and established business.

“Partners like Penrite, an Australian, family-owned brand showcase the true Australian spirit of business and we’re excited to promote their product.”

Payne has this year run #10 in Super2, the same number which his predecessor Lee Holdsworth has been donning in the main game.
