Grove Racing’s parting gift for Holdsworth

RETIRING Supercars driver Lee Holdsworth has a new ride for 2023.

Grove Racing presented the 39-year-old with a mobility scooter ahead of his final Supercars starts as a full-time driver at the Adelaide 500.

The team gathered prior to Friday practice to mark the occasion, in which owner Stephen Grove paid tribute to Holdsworth’s contribution to the squad.

Holdsworth was given a one-year assignment with the team this year while it waited for rising star Matt Payne to be ready to graduate to the main game.

Teammate David Reynolds surprised Holdsworth with the scooter, which was presented alongside a walking stick, dressing gown, slippers, glasses and a 10-litre keg of NED Whisky.

“I was a bit worried about what I was going to be presented but when it arrived, I thought it was hilarious,” said Holdsworth.

“This is probably the first time it has started to kick in that it is my final round and the reality of it.

“After 510 races on Sunday I think I’ll probably shed a few tears and soak up the moment, the crowd here is sensational so I couldn’t think of a better way to finish off my career.

“It’s very humbling to have the team come together and celebrate my career before we go racing, I’m hoping we have much more to celebrate on Sunday night.”

Holdsworth is set to return to Walkinshaw Andretti United as a co-driver next year, having won the Repco Bathurst 1000 with Chaz Mostert in 2021.

Grove Racing subsequently gave Holdsworth the opportunity to return for one last full-time season before focusing on a new career in commercial real estate.
