Groves set to spurn wildcard temptation

GROVE Racing is unlikely to deploy its ex-David Reynolds Gen3 Mustang for a Repco Supercars Championship wildcard this year.

The Braeside squad built up a brand-new Ford for recruit Richie Stanaway, giving it three race-ready main game cars, along with Matt Payne’s #19 Penrite Mustang which the youngster also drove last year.

However, the Groves are set to spurn any temptations for a wildcard in the immediate future.

“Look, wildcards are never out of the question but for sure, we’re trying to really focus on #19 and #26 and making sure that we execute with those two cars as best as we can,” team principal David Cauchi told the Motorsport News Podcast.

“Wildcard programs, they can be beneficial, but you have also got to make sure you’re putting the right package together with the right drivers and being able to support it with good people to get a good result.

“So it’s not something we want to do half-heartedly or anything like that, that’s not how we operate.

“There’s no immediate plans to do any wildcards with that chassis this year, but also you never say never.”

Chassis GR-01, which is now the Groves’ spare Supercar, was driven to victory by Reynolds at the 2023 Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500.

Wildcards are set to become a talking point in the coming months, with Triple Eight having already confirmed an effort involving Craig Lowndes and Cooper Murray, and Matt Stone Racing set to field Cameron Crick in a third car at some stage.

Dick Johnson Racing is yet to comment on whether it will run another wildcard program as it did last year at Bathurst, while Walkinshaw Andretti United, the Blanchard Racing Team and Erebus Motorsport are other possibilities.

Notably, WAU has veteran Warren Luff under contract and has yet to loan him out as was done in 2023, while Lee Holdsworth and Fabian Coulthard have been retained for its main two co-drives.

Erebus meanwhile has even floated the idea of an Adelaide 500 wildcard for NASCAR ace Kyle Busch.
