Guaranteed graduation frees up Triple Eight title contender

MATT Stone Racing’s 2023 Repco Supercars Championship recruit Cameron Hill is plotting an all-out assault on the Super2 title at this weekend’s Adelaide decider.

Hill enters as an outside chance, placed fourth and 165 points behind Triple Eight teammate Declan Fraser, with up to 300 points still in play.

He believes that underdog status, and the fact his future is under lock and key, play into his hands.

Neither Fraser nor second-placed Zak Best (Tickford Racing) have announced their 2023 plans as yet, with all main game seats seemingly sewn up now.

“Everyone is racing for the title, so you can be sure that there are going to be drivers putting it all on the line,” said the Canberran, who has plenty of Adelaide experience from other categories.

“There are some with not much to lose and others with a lot more at risk.

“Declan’s in a position where it’s his to lose and that definitely changes your mentality.

“Knowing my future plans are locked in with MSR, it takes some of the pressure off.

“I can enjoy racing the car this weekend, soak in all the atmosphere and use the experience to keep building for 2023.

“If we can have a strong result and that translates to a good series result as well, it is a bonus. It will be nice to leave Triple Eight on a high considering the team won’t be racing Super2 next year.

“It would be nice to get a win on Triple Eight’s last Super2 event.”

Hill and Grove Racing’s Matt Payne will also be battling for rookie of the year honours, the latter currently 33 points ahead.

Hill and Payne are set to continue that rivalry next season, as the only two drivers locked in for a promotion to the Supercars Championship.
