HAZELWOOD IN FRAME FOR SURPRISE BRT SWITCH

TODD Hazelwood could be at the centre of the latest Supercars silly season shock.

The rumour mill has gone into overdrive in recent days, with V8 Sleuth learning that Hazelwood has emerged as a leading contender to join the Blanchard Racing Team in 2023.

With BRT incumbent Tim Slade expected to move to PremiAir Racing, Lee Holdsworth had been tipped to score the #3 CoolDrive Mustang seat – until announcing he’d retire at the end of this season.

That threw a spanner in the works as to whether the team would consider Zane Goddard or Fabian Coulthard, both of whom are free agents in the primary driver market, or another option.

However, Hazelwood’s name started gathering momentum late last week and the 2017 Super2 Series winner is now considered the favourite.

Both Hazelwood and Jack Le Brocq had been announced on two-year deals at MSR through 2023, although it has now been discovered that those were one-plus-plus arrangements in the team’s favour.

Hazelwood is in his second stint at MSR, having previously driven for the Yatala squad from 2014 to 2019 (the first four years coming in Super2).

He then departed to Brad Jones Racing for two seasons, collecting a maiden podium at Sydney Motorsport Park in 2020, before returning at the start of this year.

The reunion started with a bang, Hazelwood recording seven top 10s from the opening 12 races before experiencing a sharp drop-off in form: he has not finished better than 15th in the past 14 races.

A move to BRT would also be a reunion of sorts for Hazelwood, having made his Bathurst 1000 debut alongside Blanchard in the Brad Jones Racing-run CoolDrive Holden in 2017.

Their three-event endurance campaign together included a horror accident for Hazelwood at the Sandown 500, from which the driver walked away unscathed.
