Hearing adjourned on McLeod/Murray rollover clash

A VERDICT on the incident which resulted in Super2 rookie Cameron McLeod’s mammoth Perth rollover will have to wait.

McLeod and Cooper Murray made contact in the latter stages of today’s Dunlop Series race, and the aftermath was nothing short of frightening.

How the blame should be apportioned has proven a divisive topic in the Wanneroo Raceway paddock, McLeod having chased Murray to the edge of the track, and the latter having kept his foot on the throttle.

Both drivers were called in to see Motorsport Australia, but a hearing on the matter has been adjourned.

“The Stewards convened a hearing following the Super2 race regarding the contact between cars 88 and 92. It was part-heard and adjourned to a date to be fixed,” a Motorsport Australia spokesperson confirmed.

“Results remain provisional until the hearing has concluded.”

A front-on shot of the damage

Murray defended his role in the incident, speaking soon after the race.

“Obviously it was unfortunate, you never want to see a car that wrecked,” said the Eggleston Motorsport driver.

“But coming out of Turn 6 I had overlap on Cameron so going down the straight he started to squeeze me more and more to the right side of the track while there was overlap.

“It got to a certain point where I couldn’t turn any more right but he kept turning.

“I’m a racer at heart, I’m not going to back out; if you want to keep turning, that’s what’s going to happen. But I hope he’s okay.”

For his part, McLeod said: “I am alright. It was a bit of a bad end to our weekend, it was a pretty scary incident flying through the air for a little bit there.

“I have chatted to Cooper, and we are all good, there is no bad blood between us. Hopefully we can push through from this.”

With results backdated a lap in line with red flag protocols, McLeod was provisionally classified third and Murray sixth, in a race won by Zach Bates.
