Herne raring for trans-Tasman V8 decider

NATHAN Herne is ready to lead his country into battle as the V8-powered TA2 Trans-Tasman Challenge is decided this weekend on the New Zealand Grand Prix undercard.

Australia and New Zealand are being represented by a team of eight drivers each, and a Herne hat-trick last weekend at Ruapuna helped Australia take the lead at the halfway point of the competition.

Highlands Motorsport Park hosts the second and final leg, with Australia up 179 to 134.

“Ruapuna was an awesome track to race at,” said Herne.

“Highlands Motorsport Park has been talked up by all the Kiwis, they have all said how good of a track it is.

“It is going to be hard to set the cars up for this track but I think these TA2 cars will surprise everyone with the lap times around that track.”

The winning nation will be awarded the Jason Richards Memorial Trophy – separate to the silverware dedicated to the winning driver at each year’s New Zealand Supercars round.

Mark Crutcher and Peter Ward are captaining Australia and New Zealand, respectively.

In addition to the last race of the weekend being the NZGP, Highlands is hosting the fifth and final round of the 2024 Castrol Toyota Formula Regional Oceania Championship; Polish teen Roman Bilinski holds a 56-point lead over nearest threat Liam Sceats.
