Holdsworth wins Barry Sheene Medal at Supercars Gala Awards

RETIRING Supercars veteran Lee Holdsworth has been awarded the Barry Sheene Medal at the Supercars Gala Awards in Adelaide.

It was an emotional night for the 39-year-old, who yesterday completed his final Supercars race as a full-time driver before concentrating on a career in commercial real estate.

Voted on by members of the media, the Sheene Medal is awarded to the ‘best and fairest’ driver based on criteria including sportsmanship, leadership and humility.

Named in honour of former motorcycle world champion and Supercars commentator Sheene, the medal has been awarded since 2003.

Holdsworth joins Craig Lowndes (five times), Scott McLaughlin (3), Jamie Whincup (3), Marcos Ambrose (2), Will Davison, James Courtney, Mark Winterbottom, David Reynolds and Shane van Gisbergen on the honour roll.

Perhaps fittingly, the other media-voted award, the Mike Kable Young Gun for the best first-year Supercars driver, went to Matt Payne.

The 20-year-old Kiwi finished third in this year’s Super2 Series with Grove Racing and will replace Holdsworth in the team’s Supercars Championship squad next year.

Cam Waters claimed the Drivers’ Driver Award for the second time, an award voted on by the drivers to recognise “outstanding conduct over the course of the season”.

Supercars also inducted two new members to its Hall of Fame, its list of legends joined by Craig Lowndes and Tim Schenken.

The night also featured a formal presentation of the Supercars Championship trophy to van Gisbergen, following his spectacular on-track celebration with the silverware on Sunday.
