Holdsworth’s hilarious pulling of rank for burnout

RETIRING driver Lee Holdsworth jokingly put Supercars’ newest race winner in his place in the moments after the Sunday season-closer in Adelaide.

Having just made it to the end of his 510th Repco Supercars Championship race – the last of his full-time career – Holdsworth wasn’t about to let rookie sensation Broc Feeney steal the show.

During his acceptance speech of the Barry Sheene Medal last night at the Supercars gala, the 39-year-old sent the room into raptures with his recount of the moment.

“I said before the weekend I was going to do a donut, drop a burnout win or lose and I got to do that,” said Holdsworth.

“I saw Broc Feeney doing one at Turn 9 and I pulled up next to him like ‘f*** off mate, you’ve got plenty of years ahead of you!’”

Feeney of course had just won his maiden race in what was Holden’s last ever appearance in the main game.

Holdsworth meanwhile came home a fine ninth to save Grove Racing from losing fifth in the teams’ championship.

The 2021 Bathurst winner spoke with excitement about the future, which will involve a Walkinshaw Andretti United co-drive as well as full-time work in the commercial real estate industry, and pride of the past.

“The other day I thought about it, I actually started driving against Brad Jones so that makes me pretty old!” Holdsworth laughed, with Jones in attendance.

“As well as John Bowe and all those legends.

“I just feel really special to have been able to do this for so long and to see so many generations come through, the sport is looking really healthy for the future.

“I’m just so blessed to have been a part of it for so long.”

Matt Payne will take over as David Reynolds’ teammate at Grove Racing in 2023.
