How Perth will reveal Gen3 evolution

THE evolution of the Gen3 Supercar will get its first public test this weekend.

Much has changed with the new-generation cars since they debuted 14 months ago on the streets of Newcastle.

Besides various teething issues tidied up along the way, parity has triggered several tweaks on the aero, engine and Centre of Gravity fronts.

Cars came back from off-season wind tunnel testing with increased downforce – the effects of which no doubt have been ascertained by teams, but less so externally.

Specifically, exactly how much faster are the 2024 Gen3 cars compared to last year?

The Bosch Power Tools Perth SuperSprint will be the first real chance to judge that matter.

That’s because the first two events of this season, Bathurst and Albert Park, were run on different compound tyres to 2023, and Round 3 involved a Taupō track which the category had never before visited.

Dunlop’s soft compound tyre will be used at Wanneroo Raceway, just as was the case 12 months ago.

With the event run at a similar time of year, the only real variable besides car evolution is a change to the minimum tyre pressure allowed (15psi, down from 17psi).

The benchmark Gen3 time from the 2023 Perth SuperSprint was a 54.1828s set by Broc Feeney in the latter Sunday qualifying session (0.7196s slower than the best lap from 2022).

Throughout last year, Gen3 tended to be slower than Gen2.

The evidence suggests the gap may have now closed.

The best qualifying time at this year’s Bathurst 500, on the hard tyre, was 1.06s shy of Brodie Kostecki’s stunning soft tyre-shod effort to clinch pole for the 2023 Great Race.

At Albert Park, Chaz Mostert secured pole for the Sunday race with a soft tyre lap that was nearly a full second quicker than the best super soft lap there in 2023.

There should be a clearer, like-for-like 2023 versus 2024 comparison by the time the Perth SuperSprint has been run and done.
