‘Insane’ Aussie Racing Cars excite van Gisbergen

SHANE van Gisbergen has spoken with enthusiasm about the chance to make a cameo appearance in the Aussie Racing Cars series.

Van Gisbergen will take part in the category’s season finale this weekend at Highlands Motorsport Park in New Zealand, where he will also race a Brabham BT62 in the Highlands 6 Hour headline act.

The NASCAR-bound star did not hesitate when offered the Aussie Racing Cars opportunity.

“It’s going to be awesome,” van Gisbergen beamed, speaking with V8 Sleuth.

“Brad Ward from Aussie Cars rang me the other week and said ‘we have got a bunch of cars going over and we have got a spare one, do you want to go in it?’ And I said ‘yes’.

“I drove one, 10 years ago at Highlands actually, so I’m looking forward to it and just having a race.

“Unfortunately it’s their last championship round so I’ll try not to get involved in anyone’s stuff but it will just be fun to race and have a fun weekend in the 6 Hour and the Aussie Car.”

While not as high-speed as other machinery he’s driven, van Gisbergen doubled down on his excitement to get involved.

“Stuff happens fast and the racing obviously looks insane,” he said.

“I just love that track, love that place. I haven’t raced there since 2016 or ’17, so I just want to go and have some fun.”

Van Gisbergen has one Repco Supercars Championship round start remaining for the foreseeable future: the VAILO Adelaide 500 on November 23-26.

He will enter as the only threat left standing between Brodie Kostecki/Erebus Motorsport and their maiden Supercars title. Kostecki holds a 131-point lead, with no more than 300 up for grabs.
