Johnson considering selling TCM XD

THE Tru-Blu XD Ford Falcon driven to multiple Touring Car Masters race wins by Steven Johnson could change hands in the foreseeable future.

Johnson has confirmed to V8 Sleuth that he is considering selling the car, which is currently sidelined due to a sponsorship shortfall.

The 48-year-old raced the XD in the 2022 TCM season-opener, missed Rounds 2 and 3, and has steered Russell and Julie Hancock’s Ford Mustang at the past two events – including a historic cleansweep last weekend at Bathurst.

With his focus firmly on son Jett’s career, Johnson is open-minded about his options.

“There has been quite a few people that have actually enquired and quite love the car, not just because it’s a fast car for TCM but also because of the background behind it,” he said.

“It’s only the third ever XD that our family has built.

“I’m sort of looking further forward into the future at the moment with what’s happening with Jett and work and timing and all of that.

“I think if the right person comes along and pays the money for it, then we’ll probably look at selling it.

“I’ve got an opportunity to drive Russell and Julie’s Mustang for next year but I haven’t committed to that yet because I just don’t know whether I’m going to have enough time on my hands to be able to do everything that I need to do.

“So at the moment, for sure, it’s not out there advertised on Motorsport Sales or anything like that, it’s literally just a couple of people have asked and we’ve said ‘yeah, we’ll look at it’.”

It was aboard an XD that Steven’s father Dick encountered the infamous rock at the 1980 Bathurst 1000.

He stuck with the model to win the Great Race the following year, plus each of the 1981 and 1982 championships.

The new-edition XD was built to TCM rules as a tribute to that car and debuted at the 2020 Adelaide 500.

Johnson won three races with it last year, one at Sydney Motorsport Park and two at Mount Panorama.
