Johnson impresses potential Super3 boss

JETT Johnson and MW Motorsport have hailed a successful test outing at Winton Motor Raceway.

The third-generation racer hopped behind the wheel of an MWM Nissan yesterday as he ramps up hopes to contest the 2023 Dunlop Super3 Series.

Driving KR004, used by Todd Kelly for four seasons in the main game and most recently by Angelo Mouzouris in Super2, Johnson completed approximately 60 laps.

“It was good. I was struggling with a little bit of set-up throughout the day, just trying to get a bit of understeer out of the car but apart from that it was a pretty good day,” the 17-year-old told V8 Sleuth.

“It just took a bit for me to get used to the car and to learn the car but once I got there, I was starting to feel quite comfortable towards the end of the day.”

MWM boss Matt White acted as engineer for Johnson and liked what he saw.

“It was nice. You can tell he has been around motorsport all his life,” said White, whose team has won a record four Super2 titles, plus one in Super3.

“He listens well and adapted quite quickly because he hasn’t done a lot of laps in one of these from what I can gather.

“He found his feet and we managed to run through some tuning of the car and just give him a bit of an idea of how things work and what you can make them do.

“I think he was pretty happy at the end of the day, he did a great job.”

White remains tight-lipped about his own 2023 plans, his Altima fleet having been bumped down to Super3 status, leaving him needing to acquire ZB Commodores or Gen2 Mustangs to stay in the second tier.

Either way, Johnson is excited by the prospect of racing for MWM in Super3, pending the ability to pull together the necessary budget.

“I’d love to do Super3 next year, it’s just going to be quite hard to find the funding to do that, but if we can we’re absolutely excited,” he said.

“It’s going to be great hopefully racing at Supercars events next year and it will also help me with being able to watch other people in the main game and try to expand my driving even more.

“I’m really excited to hopefully be taking that next step next year.”

The 2023 Super2/Super3 schedule includes stops at Newcastle, Perth, Townsville, Sandown, Bathurst and Adelaide.

MWM also yesterday completed a handover for the Altima it has sold to Bradley Neill, that car already having been set aside for Cameron McLeod’s upcoming Super3 campaign.
