Johnson to make AU Falcon race return in Winton enduro

STEVEN Johnson will step back behind the wheel of an AU model Ford Falcon at the Winton 300 later this month.

Johnson, who drove AU model Falcon V8 Supercars for his father Dick’s team between 1999 and 2002, will team up with regular ‘The Driver’s Seat’ SEN radio show co-host – and TA2 racer – Matt MacKelden in the 300-kilometre enduro.

They’ll be behind the wheel of an AU Falcon XR6 that was built by Ford Racing under the direction of the late Howard Marsden and competed in Targa Tasmania in 2001 crewed by Steve Hoinville and Greg Foletta.

It’s now owned by Griffith-based Lanham Ford dealer principal Stuart Lanham.

“We bought the car when BA came out,” he told V8 Sleuth this week.

“It was surplus to Ford’s needs and basically, we’ve had it ever since and used it for club days. It hasn’t done anything in about three years.

“Matty Cripps, who is Matt MacKelden’s engineer, is our foreman, so that’s where it started from.

“Listening to their radio show, they’ve been crapping on about AU Falcons for the last six months and that led to them talking about maybe getting an MX5 Mazda out for the Winton race, so I said let’s get the AU out for it!”

The event at Winton, on November 18-20, will also see the final round of the TA2 Muscle Car Series currently led by Steven’s son Jett.

Johnson Jnr’s NAPA Auto Parts entry holds a 91-point lead in the series heading into the final round.
