Kelly back after midnight rebuild

KELLY Racing has pulled off another sterling rebuild to get Mason Kelly back for the Sunday leg of the Perth Super2 round.

The 19-year-old’s promising Saturday met an unfortunate end, when he was an innocent victim of a tangle between Jett Johnson and Callum Walker ahead.

Kelly Jr had qualified eighth and was running sixth before blotting his copybook with a run through the Turn 1 gravel.

That sent him to the rear of the field and paved the way for worse to come.

“Yesterday started off really well. I just made a stupid mistake and ended up the back with those guys and unfortunately got tangled up,” Kelly told V8 Sleuth.

“Ultimately it was my mistake, I shouldn’t have been back there.”

After a big repair effort, Kelly will be good to go for Sunday qualifying at 11:05am local time (1:05pm AEST).

“It was about midnight that we finished up,” he said.

“The guys did a really great job to put it back together and have it ready for qualifying this morning.”

Teammate Aaron Cameron placed fifth in Race 1, as defending champion Kai Allen stormed to his third straight victory.
