Kostecki soars to another Adelaide 500 pole

BRODIE Kostecki has proven he’s not about to take his foot off the throttle at the Adelaide 500 despite his maiden Supercars championship being wrapped up.

Having been seventh in qualifying this morning, Kostecki was fourth out on track for the Top 10 Shootout but that did little to prevent him continuing a stunning weekend.

A couple of pre-Shootout sprinkles saw the session declared wet, but the weather gods held off as James Golding got things underway.

The in-form PremiAir Racing driver had a big slide through Turn 3 but survived to lay down a 1:20.1443s as the initial marker.

That proved too good for the next two drivers to hit the track, Todd Hazelwood and Andre Heimgartner.

Still buzzing from his title triumph, Kostecki then blew the field away with a 1:19.5438s, going more than six tenths quicker than Golding.

Six challengers were still to come but none could topple the #99 Coca-Cola Camaro.

Chaz Mostert, Thomas Randle, Broc Feeney and Cam Waters all put themselves in the mix, unlike David Reynolds who was consigned to 10th after an immediate kerb strike.

Feeney, like Hazelwood, had a scrape of the concrete on the exit of Turn 11.

Ultimately it was qualifying fast-man Matt Payne who got closest to knocking Kostecki off his perch.

Payne will start second, having been a mere 0.0314s off the pace.

For Kostecki, it brings up a 10th pole of the season, with the 26-year-old vowing to put his $10,000 season pole award towards a memorable Erebus Christmas party.

“It’s awesome to back it up again today,” he said.

“We had good qualifying speed yesterday and to back it up today is just awesome, and congrats to Matty Payne on a front row again.

“We were having a bit of a joke prior to qualifying, I was trying to put the young fella under a bit of pressure, but he’s done an awesome job, so congrats to them.

“I’m really looking forward to this afternoon and hopefully we can finish off the season with a win.”

The 78-lapper will start at 2:45pm local time (3:15pm AEDT).
