Kostecki sweeps The Bend as Brown, Feeney falter

BRODIE Kostecki has completed a Tailem Bend cleansweep as his championship rivals faltered.

Compared to the previous two races of the weekend, it was a rather tame first lap.

Different, however, was that the car starting second did not shoot into the lead this time.

Rather, Cam Waters started poorly and dropped to fourth, while Nick Percat behind made a lightning getaway to find himself challenging polesitter Brodie Kostecki for the lead.

Kostecki hung on, with six Mustangs on his tail.

Waters quickly worked his way to the front of the Ford queue, making an aggressive move on teammate Thomas Randle at Turn 6 on Lap 1, and then picking off Percat at Turn 1 on Lap 3.

Waters quickly pulled away from Percat and homed in on Kostecki, although not quite enough to launch a proper attack.

Bryce Fullwood was the first to stop, doing so in wild fashion on Lap 4 and collecting a 15-second penalty for his troubles after being found to have been speeding in the lane.

Matt Payne was among those to stop the next lap, his race unravelling with a slow change of his left-rear tyre.

Come Lap 6, Randle was able to squeeze by Percat at Turn 6, in a move for the final place on the provisional podium.

Meanwhile in the background, Will Brown’s horrid weekend went from bad to worse as he appeared to spin off the circuit all on his own, dumping a chunk of track position.

Percat was the first of the lead quartet to pit on Lap 8, with Tickford/Randle subsequently covering off that threat.

Waters and Kostecki followed suit a few laps later, with their respective crews standing tall under pressure.

With the pitstop sequence shaking out, it remained Kostecki from Waters, Randle and Percat, with van Gisbergen up to fifth but with a cloud hovering over his result.

That was due to a pitstop issue to be investigated post-race.

UPDATE: Triple Eight pinged for pitstop infringement

Those five finished in that order, although Waters was able to close to within 0.9468s of Kostecki by the end.

It marks the Monster Energy Mustang star’s first podium since Race 1 of the season-opening Newcastle 500, but not even he could prevent Kostecki taking the first sweep of a three-race Supercars round since van Gisbergen’s 2022 domination of The Bend.

Waters further picked up the five bonus points for fastest lap.

Making up the second half of the top 10 was Will Davison, Anton De Pasquale, James Courtney, Chaz Mostert and Jack Le Brocq.

Brown crossed the line 15th but inherited two positions thanks to time penalties for Fullwood and David Reynolds.

The latter copped a 15-second hit for contact which sent Broc Feeney spinning off at Turn 18 on the penultimate lap.

That relegated Feeney to 25th and last, the Triple Eight ace having already survived a vigorous exchange with Mostert.

Kostecki now leads the championship by 137 points.

Van Gisbergen is second, 91 points clear of Feeney, with Brown a further 30 back.

Next up is the Sandown 500 across September 15-17.
