Kostecki tops icy opening Supercars practice in Tasmania

CHAMPIONSHIP leader Brodie Kostecki has made a fast start to the Tasmania SuperSprint, braving the cold conditions to top opening practice.

With the Symmons Plains circuit playing into the strengths of the lighter and lower downforce Gen3 cars – and Dunlop’s super soft tyre compound in play – lap times were immediately fast.

Cam Waters was the initial pacesetter five minutes in, on a 51.8369s.

That marker was slashed lap after lap in the subsequent minutes, with the Fords of James Courtney, Will Davison and Waters working it down to a 51.2577s by the latter.

The session settled down thereafter, until a late flurry as all 25 drivers headed out for a final dash.

Davison briefly knocked Waters off top spot with a 51.2071s, before Kostecki delivered a 51.0147s which would go unbeaten.

Courtney and Todd Hazelwood were also late improvers to end up second and third respectively.

Kostecki’s time, notably, is already quicker than the Supercars race lap record at Symmons Plains.

The qualifying lap record should come under threat too, that being just over a half-second away – Shane van Gisbergen’s 50.4840s last year.

STAT ATTACK: Winterbottom on brink of all-time record

There were a number of drivers who endured excursions off during Practice 1, the first of which being Kostecki running deep at the hairpin.

That same corner also momentarily caught out Andre Heimgartner, Scott Pye and Bryce Fullwood, while Macauley Jones ran wide at Turn 6.

Practice 2 starts at 10:55am AEST, ahead of a three-part qualifying and 42-lap race later today.
